I got a chance to peep the album a few months early -- and between the way-out bizarro hyphy-via-digi Afrobeat tracks and the huge bangers, I'm still figuring out how I feel about it. But I do know that more than once, I might've gotten my doodoo face on. On the real.

I really wanted to like 'At War With The Mystics,' the last Flaming Lips album, but to me, it always suffered from a lack of song ideas. It sounded really cool, and there are a few gems, but it just didn't hold up to my ears.

So I am ALL for the direction of their new record, 'Embryonic,' now dousing Lips style with krautrock influence, and a heavier dose of acid/psych guitar. Hell to the YES.

They played on the Colbert Report last night, and it was awesome:

Matthew Africa drops another amazing mixtape

Okay, usually this blog is for band-related dumbassery, but I'll use our occasionally-read internet outlet to vouch for one of our favorite Bay DJs, cratediggers and mixtape badass: Matthew Africa. Yes, it's his real name.

Matthew made one of my all-time favorite mixtapes, the 69-song stunner "Dirty R&B: The Best of R. Kelly," which is an endlessly listenable, perfectly sequenced double-disc mixtape highlighting the best of Kells, either on guest verse, paired with Jay-Z or by his brilliant self. I've listened to that mixtape more times than I can count, and when he followed up with the Southern-fried fight rap mixtape "Hard As Fuck," I was knocked out by the 1-2 punch of these mixes.

So it's no surprise to me that Matthew took one of my favorite current rap genres, jerkin, and delivered a killer podcast of jerkin tracks that probably deserves its own CD release. If you're not aware of jerkin, this is a pretty good place to start, although you can read up on it on Wikipedia, although it reads a little dry for my taste. Basically, jerkin sounds like "Vans" by the Pack, as it's minimal hip hop made mostly by teenagers, but the lyrics are usually about eating pussy. No lie.

You can listen to it here, and it's absolutely worth your time to check it out.

But we're alive, and ready to blog all kinds.

Here are the things we've been doing:

- Making an LP. It's awesome! We made it at Tiny Telephone, which is the best studio in San Francisco, and it's called "waking heat". Wanna hear it? We've got some tracks here, our excellent Muxtape page.
- We made a video with Wiretap Music, that you can see on their site. We talk tacos, arguing, practicing and why we only have 3 favorite bands.
- Moving to San Francisco! At least, me and Alex.
- Not buying "Blueprint 3". Because, let's be honest, odds aren't good that it's enjoyable.

We bought about 10 cans of this, the first "Extreme Relaxation Beverage", when we were in Austin. it's not sold on the West Coast, and as claimed, it does indeed "slow your roll".

It contains Melatonin and no alcohol. We're not sure about the beverage as far as replacing Sparks (R.I.P.), but Chris has claimed it is quite enjoyable. And you can't fault too many things that are grape-flavored. See: Dimetapp, sizzurp, Kool-Aid, most blunts rolled in Oakland.

After a couple days of rest in Berkeley, we headed North to Chico to play with all time badasses Floss Anonymous. These dudes covered Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time" then for an encore, they covered it AGAIN. Brilliant.

We've added skateboarding to our free tour activities, and you can find us in any tour stop falling on the sidewalk on Tyler's sweet elementary school Toy Machine board.

We played the Space in Salem, Oregon last night. Good times, good people. For the first time on any tour, we succumbed to getting a motel for the night. Taking full opportunity of the romantic potential, we purchased some Andre champagne and nestled into bed while whispering sweet nothings into each others' ears. Obviously.

We've been offered a house party in Salem tonight, hooray. Then it's up to Washington for more skateboarding and bagels.

Tyler's Secret Talents and Hobbies

As far as we know, Tyler only has like 3 interests: Music, da ladies, drinking, and star wars...alright, that's four. We're pretty sure he hates everything else, or at least we WERE sure until this tour when he started revealing former hobbies and talents he cultivated in high school.

Things we have learned about Tyler so far:

1. Frisbee. He kinda blows at it now, but he apparently started a frisbee club at his high school.

2. Prom King: WTF?

3. Excessive extracurricular activities: jazz band, speech and debate, mock trial. God, what a nerd

4. Juggling: As I write this, Tyler is juggling limes in his parent's kitchen.

5. Surfing. AHAHAHA, Tyler in a wet suit,

6. Dating Christian girls: He once dated a girl that went to Biola, as in Bible Institute of Los Angeles.

We're pretty sure that drinking took the place of all of these hobbies. Why shouldn't it? What else will this tour reveal about our mysterious singer/guitarist?

1. we played the echo in LA! it was awesome! look at alex bring the rock action!

2. we went to santa barbara! it was full of drunk people! we played twice, once at the "chilla vista" festival, and then a house party -- we have pictures of both. thanks to the homies at the house show for the very excellent light setup. unfortunately, right after we played, the cops came, so the house excellence died down after we killed the crowd with our muuusic.

3. UCLA! we don't have photos of the show, but we played in the kerchoff room, which looks like Yale/Cambridge/Hogwarts. so rad! we DO have photos of jason's renegade on-campus parking! He is truly a champion of freestyle driving.

4. other dumb shit. we've done a lot of this. like, a lot. a lot a lot. and also, a picture of mr. tim jones. holllaaaa

Preparing for tour

Our tour begins in just a few days with our HUGE IMMENSE show at the Echo on Friday. Wooo. We're pumped. We're taking it seriously, so I thought I'd clue you in on our tour preparation process.

Essentials for tour training include:

CREATINE.

Lifting all that gear and beating up club owners to make sure we get paid our scrilla requires a lot of strength. We wake up every day at 6 am for a 2 hour work out that starts and ends with a steady protein shake supplement.

DENIM SHORTS

Yes, it's true. Everyone in the band is a never nude. It's difficult to talk about in public, but at all points we are wearing short shorts. This gets extra challenging on the road with the summer heat and our tight rawk star pants. So for the past two weeks we do Bikram Yoga wearing only our denim shorts in order to physically prepare us for the challenges ahead.

METALLICA

There's a lot of pent up male frustration on tour. Maybe for big arena bands or for bands with things like "natural good looks" or "charisma" the road is a place of endless vice. The ladies flow like a revolving door. But for us, we mostly smell weird and are surrounded by each other all the time and the only person who is excited to meet us is the old dude with 3 teeth that wants to talk about how he toured with Sabbath 40 years ago. I mean, that's a good dude, but a good listen to 'Kill Em All' will get all the road frustration out. Thanks Metallica, there was a time when you didn't suck.

SHITTY TELEVISION

I've already admitted my love for the Hills. I watch a lot of TV....like, a lot of TV. I survive on a steady diet of a morning dose of 'Cheaters,' a lunchtime viewing of my OC dvds, yelling at Tyra, chilling with Wolf Blitzer in the Situation Room, then watching the Real World Hollywood reruns for 4 hours. I can't believe Greg is such an asshole, and I really hope the buff dude gets his act together in rehab.

But on tour, there's not much TV. There's a lot of driving, a lot of music, a lot of hardwood floors, but not much TV. Like a desert camel, I've been stocking up on my TV, watching for days on end so I have reserves on tour. If I start getting the shakes and need a fix, I can just recount a silly Ellen interview or a meal from 'Take Home Chef.'

Does that make Tyler Lauren? Maybe. He might just turn down a chance to go to France so he could bone someone.
